Reading-Daily
Well done all of you who are accessing the books through Oxford Reading Tree. You are more than welcome to keep with this site or try another site we have found.

New reading site: Sunshine Online. Our school has signed up for a free 2 week trial. Feel free to log in to this website. If you do not know what reading level your child is at you can email us and we will let you know.

This site is slightly easier to navigate around and you can easily choose the exact books for your child’s reading level. (If you have your child’s reading folder at home check on the back of the book for the level, or email us)
Maths-Daily
In this activity we are going to  sequence days of the week. This activity works best if it can be developed over the week. It will just take a couple of minutes each day.
Resources:
  • Paper strips for the days of the week to be written on. Use 2 colours, one colour for weekdays and another colour for the weekend.
  • Staples or sellotape

Here are the days of the week in Māori and English.
Rāhina – Monday,
Rātu – Tuesday,
Rāapa – Wednesday,
Rāpare – Thursday,
Rāmere – Friday,
Rāhoroi – Saturday,
Rātapu – Sunday.
On Monday get a strip of paper with Monday written in both English and Māori. Join the ends of the paper strip to form a circle.
On Tuesday/Rātu add another circle.
Keeping adding the days in order.
At the end of the day tell someone what happened for you on that day.

If your child is a very able reader head to pages 4 and 5 for suitable books. If your child is new to reading stay on pages 1 and 2 for suitable books.

When you hover over a book it will pop up with what level the book is. If you need any guidance with this feel free to email Kirsty.
Maths-Daily
Bears in caves
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to engage students in problem solving to find an unknown addend.
We want the student to explain counting, grouping, and equal-sharing strategies, using words, numbers, and pictures.
Description of mathematics:
The problem may be solved with different combinations of these components.
  •  Counting one to one
  •  Counting on
  •  Equal sharing Partitioning
This activity may be carried out with guidance, or by allowing the student to follow their own method of solution. The approach should be chosen in sympathy with students’ skills and depth of understanding.

  • Activity:
    There are three (3) caves.
There are bears in each cave. There are 12 bears altogether.
If there are 2 bears in the first cave, how many bears might be in each of the other caves?
Note: This activity requires materials for illustration. The ‘bears’ could be teddy bears or toys or counters or buttons, the caves could be paper cups or bowls.
The visual approach
The student is able to use images and/or objects to represent a problem and find a solution. Prompts could be:
  1. How many bears are there altogether?
  2. How many bears are in the first cave?
  3. How many bears are not in the first cave? This is how many bears there are in the other two
    caves.
  4. How many bears might be in each of the other two caves?
The conceptual approach
The student is able to solve a problem using sharing and other strategies, to find unknown addends. Prompts from the teacher could be:
  1. How many bears are there altogether?
  2. How many bears are in the first cave?
  3. How many bears are not in the first cave?
  4. How many bears might be in each of the other two caves?
The student can record their solutions by drawing them, taking a photo or writing the equation.

A Huge Well Done To All Of You

Dear All,

We are so thankful for the way you have all supported your child to start Home Learning today. We have been amazed by all the learning being shared on Seesaw and we know a lot of this needs your input as parents.

We completely understand that some days you may complete more activities than other days depending on your home situation. This is absolutely fine!

Just a tip for some of you accessing our blog by email reminders. It appears some of the blog email reminders are coming out hours later or the next day. We suggest to you go through the Waimari School webpage each morning and click on our Patiki blog link. This way you are seeing the up to date information each day.

Have a good night everyone,

Kirsty and Tracy

Google Accounts vs Blog/Seesaw

Hi All

Kirsty and I want to clarify how we will be communicating with you and your child. We will be contacting and showing the home learning through our blog and your home email address NOT the gmail account. The gmail account was only if you are using google hangouts with your teacher. Patiki is using our class blog and seesaw only. Either Kirsty or I will ring you today for a quick chat to ensure that you are all set for tomorrow so listen out for the phone!!!

Kind Regards

Getting started for Term 2

Dear All

It's great to be back in touch even though it is from our own bubbles. We are really looking forward to hearing from you in our new distant classroom. The purpose of this post is to inform you of what is to come!

We are going to contact you through our Patiki Blog and you are welcome to email us with any questions you have:

tracy.campbell@waimairi.school.nz
kirsty.hay@waimairi.school.nz

If you prefer a chat you can ring us on the school phone number. Our extension is 607.

From the morning of Wednesday 15 April we will send through to you the activities and learning planned for that day through our class blog. It will involve some help from parents to set up some of the sites we are going to use as part of our day.

The activities are for you to do within your own 'bubble timetable'. We will be asking that you read through these with your child and you may like to print out what we have sent so your child can see it and understand what is happening. We may include different parts to the activities. This is so you and your child can pick and choose which one suits them best for that day. In Patiki the children have learning choices and activities that need to be completed by a certain time. You may wish to carry on with this routine, otherwise, you timetable it into your own "Bubble time".

We will be using Seesaw for children to post work on and for some activities. An email will be sent to you with your child's individual sign-in code. Once you have done this please send a photo of your child so that we know it's working. You will need to sign up for the following sites:

Seesaw (lookout for an email over the next few days)
sparklers.org.nz
Gonoodle.com

This is the outline of the plan for the children's projects. It is what they use at school so they are familiar with it. Next week, when we get into our Project learning the children, may wish to use this format. Feel free to write this on a piece of paper so the children can plan out their ideas. They are experts at this.

PATIKI

My project is………………………………………………………………………

It might look like this…

 (Draw your plan here)

 I will need:
(What will you need to make your project)

As well as daily tasks there will be activities that go over the week. We will ask that each day the children select at least one activity they have done for that day and post it on Seesaw. We will be able to share some of these with you.

Our focus over the next few weeks is to form connections again. Seesaw is a great way for children to proudly show their creations/activities and see photos of their friends doing the same. You might even see a video of Kirsty and Mrs Campbell, if you are lucky!!

Enjoy your Easter Break. Term 2 Home learning starts on Wednesday 15th April.
